Grouting Essentials
When it’s time to grout, here’s what you’ll need to ensure a smooth and professional finish:
1. Measuring Bucket: Always have a bucket for water to ensure precise measurements. Carefully follow the instructions on the grout bag—accuracy is key!
2. Mixing Multiple Bags: If you’re using multiple bags for a large project, it’s a good idea to dry mix them together. This helps maintain consistent color throughout the job.
3. Scale: If you’re not using a full bag, or mixing different batches, a scale is your best friend. Don’t eyeball it! Accurate proportions are crucial.
4. Clean Mixing: Use a separate, clean bucket to mix your grout. If you’re working on smaller projects or using 25lb bags, you can cut the formula in half or quarters. Mix the dry contents good before cutting down the formula. But never guess on the mix—grout formulas are scientifically formulated, and any variation can lead to failure.
5. Clean Water & Sponges: Keep multiple buckets of clean water handy, along with quality sponges. A wet sponge is your grout’s best friend, but don’t over-wet it when cleaning! A slightly damp sponge is best.
6. Microfiber Cloth: For that final polish, use a microfiber cloth to wipe down the tiles.
7. Bonus Tool: I recently purchased a grout/mortar gun for a large-format matte tile project, and I have to say—it worked wonderfully! The only tweak I had to make was i added a smaller tip from a caulking tube, as the original tips are too large.
